Repair Your Teeth with Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a popular option for restoring a tooth badly damaged by decay or trauma. These restorations not only strengthen and protect a weakened tooth, but can also restore the aesthetic of your entire smile.

Dr. Julie Liberman offers both traditional and implant-supported dental crowns at her Great Neck, NY, clinic. With over 25 years of experience, she provides quality dental care in a comfortable, relaxing environment.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns offer a wealth of benefits, including:

  • Preventing tooth loss: In many cases, a dental crown can save a tooth from extraction. By strengthening a weakened tooth, the restoration can protect you from potential reinfection or trauma.
  • Improved oral health: A decaying tooth can compromise the health of surrounding gum tissue and teeth. Through addressing the source of the problem, Dr. Liberman can protect the rest of your smile, as well.
  • Enhanced oral function: Missing teeth compromise speech and chewing function. A dental crown can consequently restore chewing efficiency and bring balance to your bite.
  • Improved aesthetics: In addition to repairing your teeth, dental crowns offer the added benefit of enhancing the appearance of your smile, as well.
  • Boosted self-esteem: A damaged smile can be embarrassing to live with. You may find that your dental crown leaves you smiling more often.

A lost or damaged tooth does not have to be a permanent problem.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Crowns?

Traditional crowns are most often recommended to patients who suffer from:

  • Tooth decay
  • Small or misshapen teeth
  • Improper bite alignment
  • Compromised chewing ability
  • A structurally weak tooth
  • Recent root canal

If you are missing a tooth or need to have one extracted, Dr. Liberman may recommend an implant-supported crown. In this case, you will need to have enough jawbone tissue to support an implant in order to qualify. If you lack it, however, a bone graft may be able to boost your candidacy.

A Look at the Procedure

Traditional dental crown

Traditional crowns are placed directly on top of the damaged tooth.

Traditional Dental Crown

In order to make room for your dental crown and remove any decay, Dr. Liberman will need to file down the tooth. She will use a local anesthetic to numb your damaged tooth before removing a conservative amount of enamel.

Once the tooth is fully prepped, the doctor can take an impression that will serve as the basis of your permanent crown. While this restoration is fabricated at a trusted off-site lab, we can place a temporary crown to protect your tooth. After your custom crown arrives, you can come in for a second appointment, during which Dr. Liberman will check the fit before permanently bonding it to your tooth.

Implant-supported dental crown

An implant-supported crown is anchored to the jaw directly with a dental implant.

Implant-Supported Dental Crown

Implant-supported crowns require a longer timeline due to the placement of dental implants. When placing your implant posts, Dr. Liberman will make an incision in your gumline and create a small hole in your jawbone into which the implant is set. The total procedure usually only takes one to two hours while recovery can take three to six months. Once your implant has fully fused with your jawbone, the permanent dental crown can be placed.
