Is your child reaching the stage of life where they need braces? Braces are a great tool to help teeth be further aligned and straightened. Although braces might not look best in photos, it is one of the best ways to guarantee a perfect smile that will last. Before your child gets braces, consult with your dentist to ensure it is the right time. You do not want to put braces on a child if their mouth is not fully grown yet. Follow along as we break down the types of braces so you can have an idea of what your child may need.
Metal braces have been here for years, and there is a reason why. They straighten the teeth with metal brackets that are glued to the teeth with metal wires and elastic bands. This method slowly moves the teeth into place with pressure. The great thing about metal braces is that they allow your dentist to have control to correct the teeth. They are also a cost-effective solution that works very effectively. One downside of metal braces is that there are some food restrictions and take some upkeep with changes out bands every 4-6 weeks.
Mini braces are similar to metal braces with brackets and wires. The only difference is they have less material. Similar to metal braces, there are food restrictions, but they are more comfortable to wear.
Self-ligating braces have the same method as brackets and wires. The only difference is that they use metal clips instead of bands. This new advancement makes straightening teeth quicker than metal and mini braces. It is because, with metal clips, the teeth can move with 99% less friction resulting in a faster process. It means less time in braces and fewer check-up appointments. The con of these braces is the same as before; there are food restrictions.
Ceramic braces are a tooth straightening system that has clear brackets. The great thing about ceramic braces is that they are less noticeable compared to other braces. It is a great option for kids who care more about their appearance and do not want to be labeled as a "brace face." The downside to ceramic braces is that they are usually more uncomfortable to wear. It is because the ceramic brace's brackets are larger. In addition to that, the braces are also more fragile and can break easier.
Invisalign is the breakthrough advancement that allows the orthodontist to straighten teeth without using braces. Instead of brackets, Invisalign uses clear aligners that sit on the teeth. Every two weeks, these aligners are switched out with new ones. The aligners can be removed for eating, which means no food restrictions. They are also very durable, so you do not have to worry about them getting broken. Although this might seem like the optimal solution, most parents do not get their children Invisalign due to the aligns being easily lost, or the children's mouth is not mature enough yet.
