How to keep your teeth healthy this New Year!

The new year is quickly approaching, which means it's time to start thinking about your resolutions for the coming year. A resolution that you might not think about much is keeping your teeth clean—and we're here to help with that! Here are some tips for staying on top of dental hygiene:

Find a Dentist!

You can start by finding a dentist. Finding a dentist can be stressful, but it doesn't have to be.

After deciding on your dentist, ensure you make regular checkups a priority! Ideally, you should have an appointment at least every six months. However, your dentist may advise you to be seen more often based on what they see during the exam, especially if there are specific problems with your gums or teeth that need special attention or treatment.

Brush and Floss Daily!

Brush twice a day, floss once daily, and use mouthwash after every meal or snack to help prevent cavities or gum disease. It might not be as fun as Netflix or ice cream, but keeping up with good oral hygiene is integral to living well into old age—and it doesn't even require much. Brushing your teeth twice a day can help prevent cavities from forming on your teeth.

You should brush your teeth after meals and snacks so that any food particles are removed from your teeth. You should also brush before bedtime to ensure that bacteria doesn’t build up overnight as much as possible. Flossing helps remove plaque that builds up between your teeth before it turns into tartar or calculus (hardened plaque). Flossing is an important part of oral hygiene because it removes the plaque from areas where a toothbrush cannot reach—in between teeth and along the gum line where toothbrushes aren't designed to go!

Slow Down on the Sugar

Avoid sugary foods and drinks—they worsen plaque! When you’re trying to keep your teeth clean, it’s important to avoid sugary foods and drinks as much as possible. These can actually damage your teeth more than help them. Instead, it’s best to eat a diet full of fruits and vegetables. Fruits are great because they’re rich in vitamins and minerals that help to strengthen your teeth. Vegetables contain fiber, which helps to remove plaque from your teeth.
