You know how much of a handful raising your children can be. Play-dates, going back and forth from school, swimming lessons, sports, music, theater. There are just a million things that you have to think about, not to mention your children’s health. We understand how stressful being a parent can be. Dr. Liberman, a mother herself, knows what a juggling act parenting can be. One thing we understand at Great Neck Dental Care is that parents need access to up-to-date and quality information - especially regarding their children’s health and dental health. So, we took the time to do some research and share with you five great tips for keeping your child’s teeth healthy.
When your child is ready, bring him or her down to Great Neck Dental Care. Dr. Liberman can work with children of all ages - so there is no need to worry about your child being too young. Like any problems, it is best to catch them early. By spending an early visit with Dr. Liberman, you will get a head start on your child’s dental health. After all, why should you wait? If your child is ready, Dr. Liberman would be happy to start building those relationships!
Though you know how to brush your teeth, your child might not - or at least not properly. Though brushing one’s teeth is a simple practice, there are some important pointers that everyone should follow. Pass these on to your child: place the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle, gently move the brush back and forth, only on the teeth, not on the gums, on the inside, outside, and chewing area of the teeth. Then, use mouthwash to rinse out any chunks of food or missed spots. If your child is old enough, teaching them how to floss would also be very helpful.
I don’t need to remind you how much young children love their junk food. However, it is important that you help show your child the importance of taking care of their teeth - which means not eating too much candy. Eating too much candy can break down the enamel of the teeth and cause cavities.
Brushing your teeth doesn’t need to be a boring punishment for your child. Make it fun! Brush your teeth alongside your child. Play some music, be goofy, maybe even make it a game. Who can brush their teeth for the longest? If your child sees you enjoying brushing your teeth and brushing on a regular basis, they will learn from your behavior and mimic it.
What child doesn’t love presents and rewards? If you see that your child has been doing a really great job brushing his or her teeth, or the dentist complimented their brushing habits, treat your child to a new toy or a milkshake! Teaching your child proper brushing and dental health habits can be difficult, but if you need any help or have any questions, do not hesitate to ask Dr. Liberman and her staff at Great Neck Dental Care.
